This unit of competency applies to operators who are required to wear breathing apparatus because they are working: in a confined space, with hazardous gases/vapour, in an oxygen deficient atmosphere and,
in other situations requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus.

PURPOSE:        

The course covers the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, as defined by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.

ELEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:

• Conduct pre-usage checks and test equipment
• Operate breathing apparatus
• Complete operations in accordance with procedures
• Clean up

PRE-REQUISITES:

Individuals’ face needs to be clean shaven.

ASSESSMENT METHODS:

Assessment methods may include more than one of the following:

• Oral questioning
• Written test
• Practical assessment (including completion of relevant documentation)
• Simulated project-based activity
• Work-based activities
