Vertical Horizonz Australia’s Heavy Rigid Vehicle course is designed to ensure trainees are competent and confident to operate and maintain heavy rigid vehicles in industries such as mining and civil construction.
Our Heavy Rigid Vehicle training instructs our trainees to operate buses, trucks, primer movers, and mobile cranes over 8-tonne GVM with two axles maximum and trailers with a maximum of 9-tonne GVM. It also includes trucks and buses in LR & MR licence categories and articulated buses.

Definition
- Heavy Rigid (HR) – bus or truck (including a prime mover or a mobile crane) over 8t GVM with more than 2 axles.
- Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9-tonne GVM.
- Also includes trucks and buses in LR & HR licence categories.
- An articulated bus (a bus that can bend in the middle).
- ROAD RANGER GEAR BOX – will give you an open licence which is required by many transport companies, also many mines require an open licence to gain access to their mines.
PURPOSE

It also includes trucks and buses in LR & MR licence categories and articulated buses. Requirements to obtain a HR Licence
- Must have held a Car Licence for at least 24 months (2 Years) or MR for 12 months.
- Complete a theory test at a Qld Transport center -10 questions – practice on line at www.transport.qld.gov.au).
- Become competent with the vehicle (6-10 hours average/competency based).
- Pass a practical driving test at QLD Transport you will need to provide your own vehicle.

ENTRY CRITERIA
Must be 18 years or older.
Requirement to demonstrate a level of written and spoken English to do this: Equivalent to Level 1 English communication skills.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
The programme trainers are all experienced practical people. They speak everyday workplace language and have a wealth of real life examples to share with trainees. Trainees are encouraged to ‘have a go’ in a supportive, safe environment.
